On Monday 23rd January 1865 she married Patrick Coyle (1828 - 1912) "Coylestown", Oughterlin, Rathmullan.
They were married "by special license", at the residence of Rev. John Ward. Their fathers were Patrick Coyle and Hugh Doherty. The marriage ceremony being held at the Priest's residence was most likely due to severe weather conditions which would have made the steep uphill journey, to Oughterlin Chapel, hazardous.
The Londonderry Journal, Wednesday 25th January 1865, describes "The Frost in Derry":
The unusually keen frost which set in on Thursday night last (19th) still continues.... unhappily several accidents have taken place....On Monday, the authorities adopted the wise precaution of sprinkling the footpaths with salt during the frost which a French Meteorologist predicts will last for six weeks!Apart from the weather, according to records, several other marriages in the area occurred in Priests' houses for a few years around that time. The Rev. J. Ward was 'Adm' (administrator) indicating that there was no Parish Priest in charge.
Patrick Coyle was a farmer and cattle dealer. After their marriage they lived at "Mary Coyle's Garden" on the Doherty (Banker) farm, Legland.
Death of Mary (Doherty Banker) Coyle (1840-1870)
Good Friday 15th April 1870, Mary gave birth to her third daughter also named Mary.
Very sadly, records reveal the death of Mary herself, six days later, at the early age of thirty years.
She is buried in Killygarvan graveyard.
Her death certificate states;
Cause of death: 'Uncertified, no medical attendant, after her Confinement 6 days'.
Her death was registered by, 'Hugh Dogherty, present at death, Legland'.
On the same day he also registered the birth of her daughter, Mary, who lived
to be 85 years of age.
Patrick Coyle bought a farm at Killygarvan Lower and moved there with his children and his sister Mary Coyle as housekeeper.
In the 1911 census, Patrick is described as "Blind" and he died in 1912.
