Charles
Doherty (Old
Charlie, Banker) 1844-1938
(3rd
son of Hugh & Susan)
Head of Household from 1882 to 1938. Unmarried.
When
referring to people who came from a difficult family background, he always said;
"You'll never get a Mavis (Song thrush) coming out of a hawk's nest"
Charlie was a whiskey drinker and at a family gathering, when someone, deciding
that he already had enough, supplied him with a glass of water, he exclaimed,
"Ah Gin salach !" (Oh! dirty Gin.)
It was said that Oughterlin Chapel was completed
in the year that he was born, but this must have been referring to some addition,
such as the Sacristy, because the Chapel was already clearly recorded as functioning
well by the Ordnance survey 1834.
His brother Tam Banker married Margaret Boyle and
they and their family lived with Charlie.
